“You dream it; we can build it!” – Mallery Hall.

What is the history of the bookcase with ladder?
The bookcase with ladder has a long history dating back to the 18th century. Before the invention of the bookcase ladder, bookshelves were typically designed to be no more than six feet high. This made it difficult to store and access large collections of books.
In the mid-18th century, a Frenchman named Etienne Avril invented a ladder that could be used to reach the upper shelves of bookcases. This ladder was made up of two rails that could be attached to the bookcase and a series of rungs that could be moved up and down the rails. This rolling ladder could be moved along the bookcase as needed, allowing readers to access books on high shelves with ease.
The bookcase ladder quickly became popular in France and throughout Europe, and it was soon adopted by libraries and book collectors all over the world. In the 19th century, bookcase ladders were often made from beautiful hardwoods like mahogany and walnut, and they were often decorated with ornate carvings and brass hardware.
Today, bookcase ladders are still used in libraries, homes, and offices all over the world. While modern bookcases may be made from a variety of materials, from wood to metal to glass, the bookcase ladder remains an elegant and functional accessory for any book lover.

Wrap Around Corner Old World Ladder Bookcase

Mallery Hall has designed and created many ladder bookcases. Some were created with a rolling ladder used along long horizontal bookcases and some were designed with a detachable library ladder to use interchangeably among several bookcases. Recently we created a ladder bookcase that is actually curved and turns a corner to use all wall space available. The client wanted to incorporate wrought iron in the design so we added a wet bar with iron doors to fill another wall all with coordinating stenciled hand painting and custom stains. A  TV entertainment bookcase wall was designed to fill an adjacent wall and compliment the other pieces. Both shared the same ladder.
