Hand Carved Solid Mahogany Grecian Style Columns
Our client, Harvard University’s American Repertory Theater, sought to recreate the grandeur of Old World Corinthian columns for their production of Pippin. We designed and hand carved two Grecian-style columns made from solid Vietnamese Mahogany. The intricate details, such as the left and right column “turns,” were crafted by hand to match their vision. For an added touch, we incorporated hand-painted gold gilding and vine-like carvings, enhancing the Old World aesthetic they wanted to achieve on stage.
Specifications:
- Material: Solid Vietnamese Mahogany (Toona Febrifuga)
- Finish: Hand-rubbed mahogany stain with semi-gold gilding
- Dimensions: Custom-sized to fit the stage setup
- Design Details: Hand-carved turns to the left and right, vine carvings up the columns
Our artisans meticulously crafted these columns using traditional methods, without the use of veneers or appliques. Every detail was hand-carved, ensuring a one-of-a-kind look. The columns, finished in hand-rubbed mahogany with gold gilding, were a focal point on stage, and the client was thrilled with the results.

As you can see in the pictures below we hand carve our designs with hand tools and authentic lathes. We have custom shops in Vietnam, Peru, Mexico, and the Philippines. For these columns we used Vietnamese Mahogany (Toona Febrifuga)

2. Design and Drawings: After the consultation, we create detailed sketches of your architectural elements. You’ll have the opportunity to review and provide feedback on these designs.
3. Craftsmanship: Once approved, our artisans begin the handcrafted process using premium materials such as mahogany, alder, or oak. Every piece from intricate cornice moldings to custom ceiling medallions is carved by hand using time-honored techniques.
4. Final Touches: Once your architectural element is built, we apply the final finishes. This includes custom stains, hand-rubbed patinas, or gold gilding to achieve your desired look. Wood and finish samples will be sent for your approval.
